Make-it-Yourself Monday: Cake decorating

Following is the first installation of our Make-it-Yourself Monday feature...

One of activities that kept me busy this weekend was a surprise birthday party for my dad. Rather than purchasing or ordering a cake, I baked and decorated a cake for the party.

Lest you think I'm unusually talented, here's a photo of the finished product:

If I had ordered the same cake from the grocery store, it would have cost $14-19. Instead I used ingredients I had on hand, costing me nothing extra. (A rough tally of the ingredient cost was around $2.50-- and could have been lower.)

If you'd like to decorate cakes, start practicing. You can take a class, too (I took the Wilton class), but the most important ingredient is lots and lots of practice. (By the way, Hobby Lobby offers Wilton classes for half price.)

You can save a huge amount of money just by learning this one skill.

Your cake turned out lovely. I bake all the time, but I've never decorated anything (beyond basic frosting). I think I may try it out now, though. After all, you had such great results!

Thanks for the inspiration!

Lovely cake! I've been doing my kids birthday cakes for several years. To my horror, I remember spending $50 for my daughter's 1st birthday cake ($10 of it was because I wanted a chocolate cake) I still can't believe I ever did such a thing! Now, my kids get great, personal cakes for $5 or less and they thrill in the idea that their mom made it!Super Duper Tip!
